Teachers are some of the most amazing human beings.  Dedicating your life to giving others the tools they need to be successful is extraordinary.   We could never pay teachers enough for what they do. Every doctor, scientist, mathematician, lawyer, and every other profession you can think of, can make their contribution to society because they were taught how to do so by a teacher.

Administrators and parents alike must realize the talent and energy it takes to be a great teacher and support the teacher’s efforts.  Administrators can support teachers by providing them with the supplies, curriculum materials and technology they need to work with their students.  They can ensure that there are policies, procedures, and supports to deal with discipline concerns that provide the opportunity for teachers to 1. Teach, 2. Be respected by students. 3 be respected by parents.  Administrators can also provide reasonable class sizes, student ratios and staff schedules that allow a teacher to work effectively, efficiently teaching all students in the best educational environment possible.

So you’re wondering what we can do as parents, where shall I start...  We can show our children that we value education so that they can value it as well.  Parents can insist their children stick to a proper routine. 1. Get to bed at a reasonable time.  2. Work before play, get your homework – done – I’ll be checking it. 3.  Teach our children to respect all adults, especially their teachers. 4. Work collaboratively with teachers so that the students understand – you’re being sent to school to learn, period.  5. Stand with the teacher when she is correcting inappropriate behavior by your child.  Reinforce the rules and expectations at home. 6.  Teach children there are repercussions for what you do and don’t do.  Start with punishments / loss of privilege.  For example, that nice colored TV in your room, cell phone and designer sneakers – poof gone.  There are societal rules that our children must learn early.  We can’t wait until their behavior becomes a legal matter to address it.  Let’s give our children every opportunity to succeed in school and in life.  Teach them to understand boundaries and respect others.

At the end of the day, the teacher has her education and children can and have floated through the grades without getting their education.  Let’s give our teachers what they need to effectively do their job.  And then, let’s thank them for doing it well.
